We created this city space alongside a house renovation that includes full length glass doors across the rear of the property, meaning the garden is always on show. The epitome of in/out living, this garden, would thoroughly become another room of the house, and with growing children to satisfy, we needed to make the most of every inch.
The space incorporates two main seating areas: one for dining and barbecuing adjacent to the house, and one for relaxing or toasting marshmallows at the back of the garden. A chunky oak pergola frames the two and incorporates two detachable swings, for use by kids and adults alike.
An outdoor kitchen features a stone worktop, cupboards and a built in gas BBQ for quick summer suppers. Raised planting beds provide seating throughout the garden and ensure the plants are protected from the odd rogue football. Raising the level of the plants also keeps the space feeling verdant, not to mention making gardening much easier on the back.
The artificial lawn will take any amount of rough and tumble and is the essence of the low maintenance garden. The existing ivy wall makes a perfect backdrop for the natural palette of materials as well as, importantly, providing shelter and food for wildlife.
