Nightingale

We created this family garden alongside the renovation of the house, which included full length glass doors across the rear of the property. With the garden in full view and growing children to satisfy, the space becomes a much used extra room, serving as a playground, chill out zone, dining room and entertaining space.

The two main seating areas, one for eating and barbecuing, and one for relaxing or toasting marshmallows are divided by a chunky oak pergola with two detachable swings seats. This links to the play space and lawn.

The outdoor kitchen features a stone worktop and built in gas BBQ for speedy summer suppers. Built in benches are a perfect solution when you are trying to squeeze a lot into the space and raising the planting level provides some protection from rogue footballs. If you are using raised beds to zone a small garden it’s a good idea to build them to seat height for a dual purpose.

This family plot has to withstand a good deal of rough and tumble and sometimes an artificial lawn is the only route to ensuring a year round, low maintenance garden. It’s therefore a good idea to retain other natural elements you might already have, such as this ivy wall which not only makes a perfect backdrop for the natural palette of materials but provides an important habitat for wildlife.
